Homeward bound in a snowstorm!

December 8th, 2013

Once again I woke up feeling great after a restless night of pain. I woke up fairly early and was ready to face the day and the long trip home. After three days of the same hospital routine, I was well versed on when to expect the nurse, nurse's aid, cleaning people, meals, etc. So I began planning the day, or more like the morning, because there was a snow warning out for the afternoon/evening, my nurse was working to try to get me discharged by one o'clock to beat the snow.

Breakfast came, then my bath, then I put on real clothes and got myself all put together and packed for the ride home. My parents and Donavan showed up around 1pm and sure as we hoped the nurse had everything set to go. We went through all the necessary paperwork. She called in my prescriptions to a Walgreens on our way out of town. We were set to go and only had to wait for a wheelchair to take me out the front door.

The ride home was in snow flurries and the roads were very slick. My pain was much better than I expected it to be with all the moving around. My folks drove their pickup truck that had a full backseat and it was the safest option as well as being pretty comfortable considering.

While driving down the road we had a scary experience. We were all chatting and my step-dad let out a yell that was unlike anything I have ever heard come out of his mouth. The sound grabbed all of our attention as well as the sound of metal crunching behind us. We looked back to see an SUV sliding out of control and hitting the front of a car behind us then bouncing back to hit the cement central divide flipping on it's side with a tire flying off. The SUV kept sliding toward us on it's side and all the traffic behind stopped. The SUV came within feet of crashing into us when it initially lost control. Had it hit us we would have slid out of control as well. There was definitely a blessing upon us on the drive home. For several minutes I was stunned and my mind pondered the irony of where I was at in all of this. My ankle replacement is the result of someone crashing into me destroying my ankle and right here on this 4 lane highway with my brand new ankle a car once again threatened that very ankle. I am thankful to have made it through that and spent a few minutes praying that no one was hurt in the wreckage we just witnessed.

After several hours on the road, we made it home. Getting around at home was a challenge, as we do not have much space and a walker and crutches require some amount of space to navigate through an area. Once planted on the couch, I settled back to relax and dozed off.
